Rhetorical Analysis

Phase 2 Part 3 “Not every brown person is Indian”

The argument I’m making using this image is that not every brown person is Indian.
There is a common misconception or stereotype that a brown-colored person with an accent is
Indian. There are so many countries where people may have similar qualities and you shouldn’t
just categorize them into one because it is rude and annoying. The reasoning behind my audience
choice is because most people that say these stereotypes are people that are not brown and don’t
understand the different backgrounds of each of these countries. The genre I chose was memes.
Using a meme is a good way to spread a message by being kind of polite and funny and for the
idea to really stick. The nature of memes is that it’s quick and can go viral which is another
reason I chose this genre to back my argument so that it gets exposure to the problem. One of the
rhetorical strategies I indulged in was personal anecdotes. I think using this was a smart move
because my audience can see the type of people they are affecting, I did the meme using my
actual self, a brown person in the photo therefore making it stronger impact. Another use of a
rhetorical strategy is Authors background(Ethos). I used this because I am bengali and Where I
grew up different cultures mix. I have seen firsthand in church ave and mcdonald brooklyn, how
people have categorized us bengali people with a group were not in. For example, I’m not going
to call someone with a Spanish accent Mexican, because I don’t know what they are, what if they
are Puerto Rican? I chose this argument in specific because it’s something I’ve experienced
personally. This one time I was talking in a group and one of the kids said he is clearly Indian
they all started laughing and I was irritated because I am Bengali. There have been tons of other
cases where I’ve seen people call other bengali people indian because he had an accent and was
brown. I live in a quite populated area of bengalis and there has always been white, black, etc
people just randomly saying well hes indian and they like this type of food. People take pride in
their countries and backgrounds and when you just assume someones identity it can be hurtful
and irritating. The purpose of my rhetorical situation was to bring a big issue to light. The issue
of categorizing brown people to one country. I attempted to appeal to my audience by simply just
making them aware of the situation and flat out say the issue “Not every brown person is indian”
A lot of people are simply uneducated and say whats easiest for them to think of.

Phase 2 Part 3 “Class unavailability”

The argument im making in this image is that there are never class times available when
the time comes to choose classes. My intended audience was the higher ups in the college
system that makes the amount of classes. The other audiences were also just college students
amd even professors. The genre I selected was memes. One of the rhetorical strategies I chose
was humor. I purposely incorporated this to invite the problem to my audience in a light manor
and be humourous. Another rhetorical strategy I used was an anecdote. This gives my audience a
look into what struggles a college student is facing . Its also to make some of my audiences, if
they ever had a similar situation to not feel alone in the situation. The purpose of this meme was
to gather a large amount of people with the same issue so we can find a solution to it. More
specifically I wanted to reach students following so we can bring this problem to the higher ups.
Everyone knows that one person alone cant change anything but if we do it in a large group we
may have a chance. One way I chose to appeal to my audience was by choosing the genre meme.
Memes are funny, short and get attention really quick This allows me to bring the situation up in
a polite manner and spread the argument fast. Not only did a choose a meme, I chose a meme
from the popular show The Office. Wide varieties and ages watch this show and it covers my
entire audience span. Im sure like me, many other college students face the struggle of not
getting the classes that meet with their schedule and this can be irritating. In the meme I gave
examples of classes that would be horrible to take at certain times. Im sure no one wants to take a
theatre history class 9pm on a friday, but the reality is some students are forced to do this. The
tone the meme gives off is annoyed, as we can see jim looks like he tried explaining something
he is trying to get across but ended up with a completely opposite result and hes just over it. This
foreshadows how people who cant get their classes are feeling.
